minä perhonen creates timeless, all-original garment textiles that are specially dyed, embroidered, and woven to recreate hand-drawn designs.

piece, is a series of patchwork covers assembled by hand using all the left-over pieces saved during the production of clothing. The union of meticulously created textiles of various colors, fabrics, and styles gives the design a completely new look.

Cousin Mix combines a total of ten designs so you can enjoy the different textures and feels of every textile.

The cover interior is made from a pale pink cow leather. It’s accented with a butterfly embroidery.

Two dotted lace bookmarks are attached.

Each patch is cut from a different spot in the original textile and sewn into the patchwork by hand, giving every cover an entirely unique look. Due to the limited nature of the textile leftovers used in the patchwork, this cover is available through lottery sale.

*In the Hobonichi Techo 2024 lineup, the Cousin book is available as the Japanese edition and the English edition.

Textiles used in piece, (Cousin Mix)

1. moss pearl (2019 Spring / Summer)

Asymmetrical Jacquard velvet spots dot this symmetrically woven checkered pattern. You can feel the vitality behind this textile’s uneven look.

2. land puzzle (2013-14 Autumn / Winter)

Corduroy ridges form various patterns, with shadows and 3D effects making it look like a scene you’re looking down on from the sky.

3. mori no hoshi (2021-22 Autumn / Winter)

This textile shows unicorns that are donkeys living serenely and peacefully. The pattern was born through the realization that the mentality to create such a world in itself is a rare gift and is a special existence.

4. roof (2001-02 Autumn / Winter)

This textile was drawn in a way to evoke depth by combining large and small herringbone patterns in a row of ellipses.

5. fogland (2007-08 Autumn / Winter)

This glossy Jacquard velvet textile has a beautiful sheen and depicts a winter forest engulfed in fog.

6. swing camellia (2022-23 Autumn / Winter)

This design shows camellias that have an energetic yet dainty look blooming as if they’re dancing. The shades are embroidered underneath the color of the flowers, making it look like an oil painting.

7. lehti (2022-23 Autumn / Winter)

This textile was made with the image of leaves in the forest talking to each other as they fall to the ground for winter.

8. tambourine (2000-01 Autumn / Winter)

Freehand-drawn circles are embroidered in dots that protrude from the fabric in this minä perhonen classic.

9. sand flower (2017 Spring / Summer)

This design is imagined from childhood memories of running magnets over the sand to catch iron sand granules. The image of the “black sand” that makes a flower shape when attracted to a magnet and the look of small flowers that bloom up towards the sky are overlayed to create this look.

10. look (2012 Spring / Summer)

A coalition of lions are looking this way. Do they want to tell us something, or rather, are they tuning in to hear what we are saying? It’s a fun textile to look at imagining these things.

About minä perhonen

minä perhonen is a brand created by designer Akira Minagawa.
First founded in 1995 under the name minä, and renamed “minä perhonen” in 2003. In Finnish, “minä” means “I,” and “perhonen” means “butterfly,” expressing Minagawa’s hopes to create designs as light-hearted and beautiful as a butterfly’s flapping wings.

Four types available for this edition

This edition of minä perhonen comes in four designs; “anone-anone,” “symphony,” “light berry,” and “piece,.”

“anone-anone” is a unique textile with silhouettes of cats drawn in simple lines irregularly lined up. The longer you look at it, the more it looks like a pattern. There are many patterns with cat motifs, but the base fabric’s color and the cat’s abstract silhouette make it look chic.

I feel that “symphony” is a delicate and charming design, with some diamond shapes decorated with motifs such as animals and flowers. In contrast, others form different motifs by combining a series of semicircles and curves. You can enjoy different looks with different colorsーthe A6 size cover is embroidered with light gray thread on navy fabric, and the A5 size is embroidered with light blue thread on yellow fabric.

“light berry” has red berries embroidered on a green background. The small fruits embroidered in fine detail are typical of minä perhonen. It also has a neat look, rare for minä perhonen, with red embroidery on the green base. It is not too flashy, but very sharp.

We enjoy the combination of the fabrics for “piece,” every year. For the 2024 edition, we decided to make them accented with bright colors, such as the orange for the A6 “forest diamond,” the Weeks covers “tambourine” and “water light,” and the pink for the A5 “swing camellia” and “land puzzle.” The leather of the inner cover is also bright and eye-catching.
