Kinran is a Japanese brocade made by cutting thin slices of paper covered in gold foil and using them as threads to weave together the design. We created a Weeks using this technique.

The fabric comes from yuge fabric farm, a handicraft shop run by Enima Design. The company also runs Essential Store, a shop that stocks antiques, artwork, and clothing from within Japan and overseas.

yuge fabric farm actively performs what it calls “fabric rescue”, which involves pulling old fabric from Japan and overseas out of cold storage and using it for new creations. The fabric used on this techo cover is also a precious find recovered from a factory in Hiroshima.

This fish scale pattern was popular in ancient China. According to ancient legend of China, a koi fish climbed up a waterfall and turned into a dragon. The fish scale pattern is regarded as the highest level pattern and was used as the family crest of feudal lords. It has since been handed down over time to become a famous pattern. You can see the elegance of the weave at a glance, and the vibrant yellow is gorgeous.

The year 2025 foil-pressed in silver on the book cover and spine shines in the light.

The back of the cover features the yuge fabric farm logo.

We invite you to weave together your own history with this special Weeks book made with traditional material.

When you order this Hobonichi Techo Weeks, you’ll receive a clear, adhesive corner pocket you can stick anywhere you like.

The book uses thin and light yet durable Tomoe River paper. This paper that underwent an overhaul with the 2024 edition techo is more resistant to bleed through, lighter despite being the same thickness, and has a smoother surface by adjusting the fibers of the paper.

The Weeks book has space for writing in plans or journal entries, and it also has 69 pages of grid paper memo pages in the back (73 pages in the English edition). The back of the book contains bonus pages, including Sample Symbols and Icons and Oodles of Noodles.

The Hobonichi Techo 2025 Weeks book comes in either English or Japanese. If you love this cover, then you can pick out which language you’d like in that book.

*The English edition book only comes as the January-start version.

If you’d like storage space or a way to change up the look of your Weeks book, you can customize your book by pairing it with a Weeks cover.

About yuge fabric farm

The yuge fabric farm is a handicraft shop run by Enima Design, which also operates the Essential Store. It’s all about being unique, from its approach to its aesthetics and even its use of deadstock fabric and sewing items from Japan and overseas. yuge, which means steam, refers to the active search in and out of Japan — through their own aesthetic filter — to discover and recycle the best materials that hit the mark for their senses and values.

A design for adults

I decided to work with Enima Design, which runs yuge fabric farm, because I was attracted to their unique business model. I also visited their Essential Store in Osaka, which was an interesting experience as I saw all kinds of fascinating antiques. Among them was a treasure trove of dead stock fabrics collected through their “fabric rescue” project. I could feel all the potential behind the growing thought of using that fabric for Hobonichi Techo covers. The kinran (gold brocade) we ended up using for the techo is a traditional and precious fabric, so we tried to keep the cover design itself simple so that the fabric could shine. The A6 size cover and Weeks book are a brilliant yellow, and the famous fish scale pattern was popular in ancient China, so I hope it appeals to adults with a real eye for beauty!

Please Read Before You Buy

In order to provide you with the most satisfaction for your product, we've compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product. Please be sure to read this information carefully before placing your order.

Test fountain pens before regular use

The Hobonichi Techo's Tomoe River paper is designed to prevent bleed-through, but some fountain pens and water-based ink pens are not compatible with this paper. When switching to a new pen, we recommend testing the pen somewhere in the book, such as the back memo pages, to see if the ink bleeds through or takes an especially long time to dry.

Pattern alignment varies by product

The patterned fabric has not been aligned to a specific layout, so the placement of each design will vary by product. The product will not be an exact replica of the one in the product photographs.

Use caution around sharp objects

The material in this product snags easily on sharp objects, so please handle with care.

Imprinted year numbers may peel

The numbers of the year are stamped onto the cover in metallic or other colored leaf, so strong rubbing or everyday use may cause the numbers to peel off.

Avoid storing in hot and humid places

Please avoid storing your product in hot, humid places or placing it atop other objects for long periods of time as this may result in lower quality and color stains.
