Dye artist Samiro Yunoki continues to actively create art even today, at age 97. These postcard sets allow you to enjoy the charm of his artwork at the size of your palm.
The Hobonichi Set of 4 has designed each drawing made especially for the Hobonichi Techo 2021’s Boy and Dog and Chair and Bucket into postcards. A boy wearing a hat and a black dog, wearing a collar, sits nicely against a vivid background. A chair and bucket that stands out from the simple white background. When you look at each piece, you’ll feel Yunoki’s warm gaze at the unassuming, day-in-the-life worldview.
The Owls Set of 4 collects pieces created by Yunoki over the years. The four postcards features the owl from Yunoki's masterpiece Choju Giga that’s 12 metres long, released in 2019, as well as a collage of fabrics From a Picture at Night that was the book cover for Ado Murayama’s Night Picture, and dye pieces Matoi (released in 2009) and Kotobuki (released in 2019).
Write to someone special, or hang it on your wall as a piece of art. It will bring joy to your day-in-the-life worldview.
Born in 1922, Samiro Yunoki became fascinated by the Japanese folk art movement while working at the Ohara Museum of Art in 1947 and began studying the work of Soetsu Yanagi. After studying under Keisuke Serizawa he began exhibiting his own stencil-dyed art. Yunoki, a frequent exhibitor at the Kokugakai Exhibition and an emeritus professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design, works in a number of other media as well, including wallpaper, printmaking, and books. He won a bronze medal at the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958.
