乗組員M Crew M	いま、お化粧してる。
	She's doing her make-up.
乗組員R Crew R	今日は大役だからね。
	A big day for her.
乗組員N Crew N	ビデオ回してる？
	Are you filming yet?
乗組員H Crew H	まだ。もう回します？
	Not yet. Do you want me to start shooting now?
乗組員N Crew N	まだ大丈夫。でもエレベーター開くところは回したい。
	No, but I want to make sure we catch him as he comes out of the elevator.
乗組員H Crew H	もう来る？
	So is he coming up now?
乗組員N Crew N	もう、いつ来てもおかしくないんだよね？
	He should be coming any minute, right?
乗組員M Crew M	うん。さっき着いたって連絡あった。
	Yup, I just got a call that he arrived.
乗組員N Crew N	開いた瞬間、カメラ回してていいんだよね？
	It's okay for us to be filming when the elevator opens, right?
乗組員M Crew M	大丈夫、ＯＫもらってる。
	Yes, they know we'll be filming.

ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞のオフィスがある
ビルのエレベーターホールで、
乗組員数名が誰かを待ち受けています。
それぞれに緊張した面持ちで、
でも、あきらかにわくわくしながら。

彼らが待っているのは、
世界的に有名なフィギュアスケーターです。

This is the elevator at the office of "Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun" ("Almost Daily Itoi News", abbreviated as Hobonichi). Several crew members are waiting for someone. They seem nervous, yet excited. The anticipated visitor is a world famous figure skater.

──名前は、ジョニー・ウィアー。

The name is Johnny Weir.

1984年アメリカ、ペンシルヴァニア州生まれ。
大寒波で凍ったトウモロコシ畑で
中古のスケート靴を履いてアイススケートを初体験し、
12歳のときはじめて受けた
グループレッスンで明らかな才能を発揮。
13歳で全米選手権ノーヴィス部門に初出場し３位。
16歳のとき、世界ジュニア選手権でチャンピオンに。
2003・2004年シーズンで全米チャンピオン。
以降、全米選手権を３連覇。
トリノオリンピック、総合５位。
バンクーバーオリンピック、総合６位。

Johnny G. Weir was born in Pennsylvania, USA in 1984. His first venture onto the ice occurred one harsh winter when the corn field behind his house froze over. He skated in between the frozen corn stalks with a second-hand pair of skates he received for Christmas. At twelve, his extraordinary talent was exposed at the first group lesson he attended. At thirteen, Johnny placed third at his first competition, the US championships novice division. At sixteen, he won the World Junior Championship. He won his first U.S. Championships in the 2003-2004 season, and defended two consecutive U.S. Championships that followed. Placed 5th at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. Placed 6th at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

熱狂的なファンを獲得する一方で、
ジョニー・ウィアーを受け入れない
スケート関係者も多かったそうです。
それでも、ジョニー・ウィアーは
ジョニー・ウィアーであることを貫き、

Although he has won enthusiastic support from a huge group of fans, it seems that there were many officials who did not approve of him. Even then, Johnny Weir continued to polish his "Johnny Weir-ness", standing out from the rest ever more than before.

ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞で
バンクーバーオリンピックの企画をやったとき、
やはり、その個性が大きな話題となりました。
だって、誰の目にも明らかなんだもの。
この選手、変で、綺麗で、魅力的なんだもの。

When we featured the Vancouver Olympics at our web site, we received many, many e-mails from our readers about Johnny. He was so different, so beautiful, and definitely attractive.

バンクーバーオリンピックで滑ったとき、
素人目にはほとんどミスなく見えました。
けれども、意外なくらい点は低かった。
ウィンタースポーツに目の肥えたカナダのファンが
ジャッジに対してブーイングしました。
ところが、キス＆クライで得点を確認した
ジョニー・ウィアーは笑顔で立ち上がり、
観客のブーイングをみずからおさえました。
すべての結果が出たフリーの演技のあとでは、
観客から送られた薔薇の冠をかぶっておおはしゃぎ。
コーチにぬがされかけた冠を奪い返し、
ショートプログラムのときと同じように
納得のいかないジャッジに対して
抗議する観客のブーイングをあおることなく、
終始笑顔でリンクを去っていきました。

To the eyes of an amateur, his performance at the Games seemed almost perfect, but the scores were not so sweet.
The Canadian audience, who wholeheartedly embrace winter sports, were booing at the judges. At the kiss and cry area, Johnny looked at the scores, stood up smiling, and gestured to calm them down. After the free skating, all was done and over with. Johnny seemed ecstatic wearing a rose crown, refusing when his coach tried to take it off. The audience again was booing at the scores,
but he remained cool and left the rink with a smile on his face.

その姿を観た、糸井重里は、
翌日のほぼ日刊イトイ新聞にこう書きました。

Shigesato Itoi saw this,
and wrote on Hobonichi the next day.

ぼくの、いま現在のいちばんの興味は、男子フィギュアのジョニー・ウィアー選手です。芸術の定義そのものがそこにいた、という感じです。メダルだ、得点だ、観客だ、国だ‥‥どれも、この人には関係ないよ、という印象に見えました。やむにやまれぬ表現欲みたいなものを、他の誰でもないじぶん自身に捧げている。つくづく、そういうふうに見えました。『吉本隆明　ほんとうの考え』の「010芸術」で語られていたような「芸術」を、この目で見たぞ、という気持ちになりましたもん。いやぁ、いいもの見ちゃったなぁ。

Right now, my interest and attention goes to Johnny Weir,the figure skater. He was as if the definition of art had come to life. Medals, scores, nationalities, the crowd... he seemed to have transcended them all. To my eyes, he seemed as if he had an uncontrollable desire to express himself, devoting that energy solely to himself. I felt that I witnessed ART as discussed with philosopher Takaaki Yoshimoto. I'm really happy that I was able to see his performance.

この原稿がきっかけとなり、
ジョニー・ウィアーの写真集を企画している
日本のエージェントの方が、
ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞に連絡してくださいました。
やり取りするうち、幸運にも縁が繋がり、
なによりもジョニー・ウィアー本人が
大きな興味を示してくださって、
なんと、とうとう、ほんとうに、
やって来ることになったのです、ここに。
そう、ジョニー・ウィアーが、
ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞のオフィスに。

This caught the eyes of the agent who was working on Johnny's art book, and she contacted us. Through the exchange, our ideas and connections grew. Above all, Johnny showed great interest and decided to visit us. Yes, Johnny Weir, coming to Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun.

	Is he in this elevator that's coming up now?
乗組員N Crew N	っぽいね。
	Probably.
乗組員M Crew M	ぽい、ぽい。
	Must be him.

	Okay, I'm filming now.

	Here he comes!

	Nooooo!

	Come on!

	What? What?

	Okay, I'm stopping the camera now...

そして、ほんとうに、
ジョニー・ウィアーはやってきました。
ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞のオフィスに。
そして、糸井重里と、
間違いなく深い部分で言葉を交わし、
単なるにぎやかな訪問、という以上の
濃密な時間を過ごすことになったのです。

And then, Johnny really knocked the doors of our Hobonichi office. Johnny and Shigesato Itoi exchanged their deepest thoughts, their encounter becoming more than just a delightful visit, but a profound and close knit time together.

──あ、エレベーターが開くようですよ？

So is this the elevator carrying Johnny?

ワーオ、です。

Wow!

まずは、荷物を置いていただいて、
ついでにオフィスをご案内。
こちらは岡本太郎さんのイスです。
通訳を務めるのは、弊社ＣＦＯ、シノダ。

First he is taken to a short tour around the office. This chair is a work of Taro Okamoto. The interpreter today is our CFO, Shinoda.

そりゃ座りますよね。いい笑顔！
ジョニーと岡本太郎さんって
ある意味、最強の組み合わせかもしれない。
あ、どせいさんもいる。なんて写真だ！

So he sits on the chair, with a big smile on his face. Johnny and Taro Okamoto might be the greatest combination. Oh, Mr. Saturn from the video game Earthbound is here too. What a picture!

弊社には和室もございます。
ウッディ・アレン作の掛け軸などに
興味津々のジョニー。

Johnny takes a look at our Japanese-style tatami room. He is glued to the hanging scroll, a work done by Woody Allen.

わ。わ。予定外。そっちはちょっと‥‥。
梱包＆発送という実直な作業をしているところへ
ジョニーがスタスタと‥‥散らかっててすいません！
思わぬところにスターが現れ、超サプライズ。

Oh, no, no, that part of the office isn't included in the tour... Johnny walks into the room where crew members are packaging and shipping. All are surprised to meet such an unexpected guest. Sorry for all the mess, Johnny!

通路にかけられた、デビッド・リンチの絵に
じーっと見入るジョニー。
ああ、その組み合わせもずいぶん素敵だ。

Johnny is drawn to the work of David Lynch, another wonderful match.

そして、糸井重里と初対面！
ナイストゥミーチュー！

And so they meet! Nice to meet you!

なんだかねぇ、最初から、
通訳を介して冗談を言い合ったりして、
妙に合ってる感じなんですよ。

They seem to hit it off instantly, joking around through the interpreter.

棚に並んだガラクタ‥‥ああ、いえ、
おもしろいオモチャなどに、
好奇心旺盛なジョニーが興味を持ったようです。

Curious Johnny's eyes meet the knick knacks on the shelf.

「気に入った？　じゃ、あげるよ」
「サンキュー！」みたいなやり取りが。

They're saying something like,
"Do you like it? You can have it."
"Thank you!"

そして、いよいよ、ふたりして、
みんなが待っているオフィスへ！

And now, they head to the office where all the others await!

あえて、今回は、いつも働いている場所に
スペシャルゲストを迎えようという趣向です。
わあ、盛り上がってる！

The idea today is to have our special guest sit in the middle of where we usually work. They are all psyched!
