Kitakata Ramen

Kitakata Ramen is the best Chinese noodle dish, and it has curly and thick noodles! There are many restaurants in Kitakata, and you can find something new with every visit. I recommend the famous “Bannai Shokudo” restaurant and the “Matsushokudou” restaurant next to it. Please be careful when you order; the “normal serving” in this area comes in an extra-large portion!

Kitakata has a culture of morning ramen. I have fond memories of when I was still single. On my day off, I would head for Kitakata on the first train and have ramen for breakfast. The Nikusoba at the famous “Bannai” is highly recommended; the grilled pork belly topped all over the noodles is so good that you won’t have any problem eating it up.

I recommend the Kitakata Ramen served at “Kawakyo.” Even for a Fukushima local used to eating it, the thick noodles have a comfortable texture and taste that makes me easily finish it, despite the fact that I usually prefer thinner noodles. The soup is light-tasted and so easy to drink that I find myself drinking the entire bowl feeling guilty pleasure.

Kitakata Ramen at “Bannai Shokudo” is superb. It is very standard but highly delicious!

Shirakawa Ramen

Kitakata Ramen is not the only noodle dish in Fukushima! This ramen is simple enough to eat every day. It has a light chicken broth rich in flavor, medium-thick chewy noodles, grilled pork, pickled bamboo shoots, spinach, and green onions.

Although Kitakata Ramen is the famous one, it is Shirakawa Ramen that you can enjoy the aroma and sweetness of soy sauce, feel the wheat flavor of the noodles, and taste the soup clung to them. There are enough restaurants to find your favorite and stimulate nostalgia.

Namie Yakisoba

It is a simple-style yakisoba with pork and bean sprouts, but the noodles are chewy and thick. It becomes even more delicious when topped with a fried egg.

Aizu Yamajio-Ramen

I was amazed that they produced salt in the mountain-surrounded Aizu region. Yamajio-Ramen will let you experience a flavor different from that of sea salt!

Soba

Fukushima’s soba is really good. I am from the Kansai region and have lived in Fukushima for more than 20 yearsーwhen I first had the soba in Fukushima, I knew that what I had in Kansai was not proper soba. I recommend the juwari soba at “Q-An” in Watari, Fukushima City. “Nao” near the station has excellent nihachi soba, which made me realize how delicious nihachi soba was.
