Wakayama Ramen
A pork bone ramen with a soy sauce flavor. The many well-known restaurants include “Wakayama Chuka-Soba Ide Shoten,” “Wakayama Ramen Marui,” with dishes with plenty of green onions, and “Chuka-Soba Marutaya.” I believe all Wakayama locals have at least one of their favorite restaurants. For the boiled eggs and “Haya-Nare Zushi” prepared on the table, you are to declare how much you ate at checkout. Although it might sound strange to some, the combination of ramen and sushi is perfect. You should try them together!

“Wakayama Chuka-Soba Ide Shoten” serves thick, pork bone-based soy sauce ramen. While you wait for the ramen to be served, you can enjoy side dishes such as the Haya-Sushi (mackerel sushi) and boiled eggs.

Delicious pork bone soy sauce ramen! The soup is served in a ramen bowl filled to the brim and on a plate. It whets your appetite to have the boiled eggs and the mackerel Haya-Sushi unique to Wakayama (which used to be topped with a bit of red ginger and wrapped in bamboo leaves) while you wait for your ramen to get ready. Those side dishes are prepared on your table, and you declare at checkout how much you had. Back in junior high school, a friend and I enjoyed sneaking out of our houses at night, riding our bicycles, and go eat. I wonder how she has been since she married in a faraway city. As someone born in the Showa era, Wakayama Ramen is an indispensable part of my memories.

I used rental bicycles during my trip to visit ramen restaurants. I was impressed by how delicious they all were!

Tenkake-Ramen
You can find the ramen at Green Corner, run by the tea shop “Gyokurin-En.” I assume it is well-known among Japanese people since it has often been featured in TV shows. The ramen is quite simpleーtenkasu deep fried flour topped on ordinary ramenーbut the taste brings a nostalgic feeling. I notice myself wanting to have it again once in a while. You can also have green tea soft-serve ice cream for dessert. The ramen and ice cream can be purchased for take-outs in several locations of the prefecture.

It is comfort food for the Wakayama locals! The light-tasted ramen with tenkasu and red ginger served at “Green Corner” is not too heavy and tastes even better as you eat. Having some Green Soft (green tea-flavored ice cream, extremely delicious) for dessert would be the perfect combination!
