Every year, our lineup includes covers in the popular "World Folk Patterns" series, which features motifs from all over the world. This design will be the 17th in the series, and features a traditional pattern from Japan.
The design for this cover is based on Japanese emakimono, or ancient illustrated scrolls. The diagonal patterns help illustrate the 2D world depicted in the scrolls, which often included this motif of clouds floating in the sky. This reinvented emaki design gives the traditional art form a simple and modern look with a warm feeling that fits the senses of modern Japanese.
The color scheme in this design features a subtle, cute peach-pink accented with ivory white patterns and clouds. Look closely and you’ll see slight smudges among the clouds to give them a fluffy look. The cover interior and pen holders are a bright green for a look that will put you at ease every time you see it.
The matte polyeseter cover material has a coarse feel that’s comfortable to the touch.

In order to provide you with the most satisfaction for your product, we've compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product.

- All covers are hand-made and may contain slight variances
Each and every cover is individually sewn by a factory worker hand-operating a sewing machine. Best efforts are made to ensure consistent sizes and specifications, but there may be slight differences.
- Design may contain smudges or uneven coloring
During the print process, patterns may contain spots where the color has become smudged or uneven.
- Black or white dots on the cover
On rare occasions, there may be small black or white dots visible on the cover. This is an unavoidable aspect of the manufacturing process.
- Outer pocket pattern may not align perfectly
The outer pocket is designed to align with the pattern beneath it, but pattern alignments may be imperfect due to the manual production process.
- Interior of cover may be loose
The interior of the cover may not be perfectly taut due to limitations during the manufacturing process.
- Cover may attract dust
The cover exterior contains a raised-nap finish that may attract dust or other particles. You can use a lint roller to clean the cover, but be sure to avoid using tape with excessively strong adhesive as this may damage the material.
- Sliding no-slip pens into the pen holder
Pens with rubber, non-slip grips may be difficult to slide into the pen holder.
- Maximum pen width of 13.5mm for pen holder
The pen holder is designed to perfectly fit the 12.2mm (0.48”) diameter Jetstream pen offered as a free bonus gift with select Japanese-version Hobonichi Web Shop products. Pens with certain shapes and materials may be difficult to pull through the holder. The holder can fit pens up to 13.5mm (0.53”) in diameter.
- Cover on Cover bonus not included
Some A6 Original covers purchased through the Hobonichi Store come with a free Cover on Cover bonus, but A5 Cousin covers do not come with a Cover on Cover. If you would like one, please purchase one separately.
- “Cover Only” price change
Due to an increase in material costs and other unavoidable factors, starting with the 2017-edition, it has become difficult to maintain the usual price of our Colors and Faux Fabric covers. In order to maintain the price of the covers, we will be offering these covers at the usual price when bought as a set with the Hobonichi Techo book. We apologize for the trouble, but when ordering the cover without a book, we will not be able to keep that price, so Cover Only orders will cost slightly more. Please add to your cart as a “Book & Cover set” to keep the cover’s lower price.
