Hi everyone! I'm Lindsay, the translator of the English Hobonichi Techo Planner. I'm currently working in the Hobonichi Tokyo office to help prepare for the 2019 Hobonichi Techo launch. The weather in Japan is really nice right now compared to my hometown in Tucson, Arizona. (Lately the highs are around 110 degrees!)

ほぼ日手帳Plannerの英訳をしているリンジーです。
今はほぼ日手帳2019年版の発売の準備を
手伝うためにほぼ日に来ています。
今アリゾナ州のツーソン市に住んでいますが、
ツーソンの44度の最高気温に比べると、
日本の天気は快適です。

Ever since I started using the Hobonichi Techo in 2009, I've made sure to get a pink techo cover whenever I can. But this year, the Michio Hoshino Weeks cover brought me back to my childhood. I've loved bears ever since I was a child, and although I liked the Coral Pink Weeks the most, I felt like I owed it to myself to get the Grizzly Bear and Cubs book. Every time I look at it, I feel really nostalgic!

2009年からほぼ日手帳を使いはじめてから、
機会があればかならず
ピンク色のカバーを選ぶことにしています。
今年もweeksの「コーラルピンク」が一番好きでしたが、
星野道夫の「グリズリーの親子」を見た瞬間、
すっかり子供の頃の自分に戻ってしまいました。
若い時からクマが大好きで、
子供の自分が絶対興奮するカバーを選べないと悪い気がして、
結局グリズリーのカバーにしました。
カバーのかわいいクマの家族を見るたびに
懐かしい気分になります。



Translating all the quotes means I usually vaguely recognize them when using the techo, but among them are some that really stuck with me. Here's one of my favorites:

日々の言葉を翻訳していると、
なんとなくどれも見覚えはありますが、
その中で特に印象に残ったのがいくつかあります。
これは好きな言葉の１つです：

夢に手足を。夢には翼しかついていない。

It's extra hard to translate phrases not typically used in daily life, and if an artistic expression has no English equivalent. But this was an especially moving quote, so I'm glad we were able to include it in the English Planner. (Sometimes we aren't able to include a quote because it needs, for example, a thorough background knowledge of a Japanese custom or holiday, or if it relies on a totally Japanese pun that doesn't translate into English.)

日常的に使われていない言葉は特に翻訳しにくいし、
英語で同じような表現がない時もあります。
でもこの言葉に感動して、海外の人にも伝えたくて、
結局英語版のPlannerにも
載せることができて嬉しかったです。
（たまに完全にPlannerに載せられない
日々の言葉があります。
特に、日本の習慣か祝日がわからないと
通じないことや英語にならない日本語のダジャレ。）

Translating quotes is always the most fun job I have every year. I hope more Japanese people will try out the English Planner and practice their English with the quotes. It's especially good practice because there's a Japanese "answer key" hidden in the Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun articles!
