Mother (EarthBound in North America) is a video game series created by Shigesato Itoi, and after years of successful Hobonichi Techo cover designs, the series makes its return to the lineup in 2018. This year’s Mother covers include the leather cover Mr. Saturn (Ninja, Bird-Fishing, Ladder), Weeks book Magicant Map, and This is Magicant.
“This is Magicant.” portrays the world inside the mind of the main character Ness near the end of the game. You can see all the characters he meets in Magicant on this cover, including favorites like Flying Man, the snowman, the clock, the flower, the baby chick, the Star Master, Swoosh, naked Ness, and more. Looking through these characters will fill players with nostalgia as they remember all the little episodes that happened in Magicant. As a playful addition to the design, the inside of the pocket has a pattern that’s different from that on the outside. We hope you look forward to discovering it once you receive the cover.
The cover interior is a deep pink, with pen holders in blue and beige. The two bookmarks are green and red, and the Mother logo is inside the bottom right pocket.
You can use this cover to turn your Hobonichi Techo into your own Magicant, filling it with your own memories, sketches, and other personal musings.
Included free with this cover is a Mr. Saturn notepad. The notepad is in the traditional Japanese vertical style, with a color Mr. Saturn on the cover and monochrome Mr. Saturn on the pages. Written in the corner is the phrase, “Write so many.”

In order to provide you with the most satisfaction for your product, we've compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product. Please be sure to read this information carefully before placing your order.
- All covers are hand-made and may contain slight variances
Each and every cover is individually sewn by a factory worker hand-operating a sewing machine. Best efforts are made to ensure consistent sizes and specifications, but there may be slight differences.
- Silk printed image may peel off over time
The logo and illustrations inside the cover are silk-printed onto the cover’s material. This delicate print may peel or come off with daily use. If using a Cover on Cover, the silk print may stick to the plastic and eventually come off with it from the constant contact.
- Design may contain smudges or uneven coloring
During the print process, patterns may contain spots where the color has become smudged or uneven.
- White spots around stitching
The design is printed over white material, so the sewing process may expose white areas around the stitches.
- Black or white dots on the cover
On rare occasions, there may be small black or white dots visible on the cover. This is an unavoidable aspect of the manufacturing process.
- Color may vary slightly between cover and pockets
The material for each part of the cover is printed or dyed separately. While colors are designed to be consistent across the entire cover, the shade may vary slightly.
- Interior of cover may be loose
The interior of the cover may not be perfectly taut due to limitations during the manufacturing process.
- Stitching may be slightly curved or bumpy.
Stitching may be slightly curved or bumpy as a result of sewing together materials of various thicknesses.
- Pen holders are rigid at first
The pen holders are rigid at first, making it difficult to insert pens. You can speed up the breaking-in process by rolling the pen holders in your hand.
- Sliding no-slip pens into the pen holder
Pens with rubber, non-slip grips may be difficult to slide into the pen holder.
- Maximum pen width of 13.5mm for pen holder
The pen holder is designed to perfectly fit the 12.2mm (0.48”) diameter Jetstream pen offered as a free bonus gift with select Japanese-version Hobonichi Web Shop products. Pens with certain shapes and materials may be difficult to pull through the holder. The holder can fit pens up to 13.5mm (0.53”) in diameter.
- Avoid exposing Cover on Cover to cold temperatures
The PVC plastic of the Cover on Cover may lose elasticity and become difficult to put on when left in cold temperatures. If this happens, we recommend letting the product sit in a warm area before applying to your cover. Please be careful when handling your Cover on Cover in cold temperatures, as it becomes more susceptible to damages if dropped or handled roughly.
- “Cover Only” price change
Due to an increase in material costs and other unavoidable factors, starting with the 2017-edition, it has become difficult to maintain the usual price of our Colors and Faux Fabric covers. In order to maintain the price of the covers, we will be offering these covers at the usual price when bought as a set with the Hobonichi Techo book. We apologize for the trouble, but when ordering the cover without a book, we will not be able to keep that price, so Cover Only orders will cost slightly more. Please add to your cart as a “Book & Cover set” to keep the cover’s lower price.
